Layout-neutral XML modules A layout template, which contains the precise design instructions, is necessary for making the printed or e-publication. The publication is a separate step in the workflow; it compiles one or more projects from the single source into different media.
Publications can be generated in various formats, including InDesign, PDF and HTML5. Layout templates, whether flow- or frame-oriented, are the key to automated layout and their quality is crucial. Automatic publication and layout recall are proven to significantly reduce costs and speed up workflows.
Publishing documents
We compile the document from the single source. We apply the previously defined metadata and filters that belong to the particular product variant. We check the document in the layout and then publish it to the desired final format. In the background, the templates are used to link the format-neutral XML modules with certain formats and styles. The designed document can be output for print in PDF, Word, FrameMaker, InDesign or as DITA. Online help systems can be in HTML, Java-Help or Adobe AIR. HTML5 is ideal for websites with responsive design (e.g. mobile devices) that also require multilingual implementations.
Publishing open data
Sometimes, output to an open data format for printable documents is preferred. ST4 can output as Word, InDesign and FrameMaker files. With the proper planning, the publishing can then be completed in the desired software and processed further as needed.
Layout recall
Despite the automated publication, the layout recall enables you to adjust column widths, insert breaks in tables or set page breaks. This can be useful for more complex layouts to obtain a perfectly designed final version of the document. When compared to conventional layout post-processing using desktop publishing software, it’s clear that relatively little effort is required for maximum effect – especially when working with foreign-language publications. The recall itself is performed in SCHEMA ST4, so that detailed optimisations can be saved and immediately checked in the preview. Reusing the settings and transferring them to other languages is another feature that ensures a fast but high-quality final result.
