Coherent terminology is one of our top priorities right from the start – and is very helpful during your product development, authoring and translation phases. Specified terms are translated in advance. We carry out this complex process together with your product managers and engineers. We then support our translators with our knowledge and information. According to DIN ISO EN 17100, a dual control (“4-eyes”) review is an integral part of quality assurance. One of these reviewers can be a specialist in your branch office.
Terminology that is accepted by the target country and expanded on a project-by-project basis, stable term matches, consistent use of terms across departmental boundaries, and significantly fewer corrective effort: these are the positive results that strong terminology delivers.
Defining terminology
For our translators, strong terminology is a key requirement that ensures high-quality work. Terminology specifications are important because the translator does not constantly work for the same customer. Terminology may be specific to your company or corporate department. Specifications are also essential because translators may translate individually and reviewers correct differently. This specific commitment ensures reliable results. Scriptor adopts the terminology from the original master. So the specific spelling variants, prohibited terms and do-not-translate terms are specified at this early stage.
Translating the terminology
We bundle all the findings from the creation of the original master and the terminology meetings. We collect and comment on background information, conduct online training with translators, and answer their questions during the translation. We are on the same team as the translators and, thus, understand the pitfalls of this very demanding task. The terminology is also applied for the labelling of diagrams and machines. Each term must have a unique translation, as required by modern translation memory system (e.g. SDL Studio and Across).
Creating MultiTerm / CrossTerm
The terms and explanations are created as a term database within the computer-aided translation software. They are then quickly available for all translations. Since innovative products require ongoing updates, a good service provider accompanies this process and makes the updated terms available to the translator. At Scriptor, we use either SDL Studio and its MultiTerm database or Across and its CrossTerm database. These are both integrated into SCHEMA ST4.
Managing the terminology review

We accompany this process to ensure high quality and on-time scheduling. We oversee the final coordinating steps with your regional representatives or with a second translator, according to your needs. It is also important that the reviewers are properly briefed on the requirements of the terminology so that the reviewed changes do not conflict. Direct contact between the translator and reviewer is helpful here.
